Back at Home, Back on the Water

Operating a successful sailing charter business in Fort Myers Beach is a dream come true. Sailing in Fort Myers Beach is one of the most relaxing events you can add to your vacation plans. Even if you are a full time resident of Florida, sailing on the Gulf of Mexico is a way to de-stress your life and enjoy some time together. I really do love what I do. I'm proud of my vessel Panacea and keep her ready to go to the many exotic destinations we have here in Southwest Florida.

My wife Pat and I take the time to have business meetings several times a week. We try to involve Maggie our "sea dog" and pick special places where we can talk, plan and be grateful for the amazing customers, clients, friends and family that we surround ourselves with. It's just the way we do business.

As you can see in this photo, we are discussing the budget plans for the next quarter, marketing materials, Internet specials, how to handle the drop in the US dollar and our 401k... Well maybe we are just having a glass of wine and feeling the sun on our faces as it drops into the sea. Yea, that's probably it. We're tired of discussing all the weird stuff in the world and are pointing our energies and thoughts to the positive.

Gratitude and Thankfulness is what we are focusing on. We appreciate what we have and no matter what level that is on, at any given time, we are grateful for it all, embrace it and share it in anyway we can.

I just lost a friend last week and was just notified that another one may not make it very much longer. I'm not dwelling on the loss's, but celebrating what they were in my life for and being thankful for what I have in my life "now" as well as reflecting on what this journey is all about. Thanks my friends for nudging me and waking me up now and then.

I have some great friends that are now official "Snowbirds." They have escaped the snow and ice of Minnesota and are spending 6 months in sunny Florida this year. The term Snowbird is hard for them to swallow, so the term is "Extended Vacation" for the time being. It's wonderful to have them here and we sure enjoy sharing time with them.

On that same note, they picked up a place on the beach and shot a picture of Panacea sailing by the other day. It's a GREAT shot of Panacea sailing north along the coast of Estero Island, through the trees in their sandy front yard. I love their place and Panacea looks great sailing by. Thanks Guys.

I also want you to know that for all those texting addicts out there, I have a system now that you can receive information and discounts, that vary off and on, right on your phone. Just text the word, SAIL to 77948. Bring the text to the boat and receive your discount when you pay for your sail. It's also a great way for me to shoot you specials and updated information that you may need. I don't send things to your phone, you have to send the text to receive the information, so do it now and then to see what's up.

I also have, in place, a way for you to buy your tickets directly online, print them at home and bring them to the boat for your sail. It's through Brown Paper Tickets and you will see the link on the website when you click on the "Daily Schedule" link.

ALSO you can check out our new "Reservation Availability Calendar." It has, pretty close to, real time updates of what tickets are available for the day of your sail, black out times, special events, etc. So it can be as easy as this:

1. Pick a day you want to sail.
2. Check the Reservation Availability Calendar for the number of tickets available. (We are proud to sail with only 6 persons.)
3. Go to the Daily Schedule page. Look for your desired package, click, buy and print your tickets.

NOTE: You may also call the number, 888-582-9046 and talk with me directly to make reservations and check for up to the minute availability. I always take reservations over the phone.

It's SO Good to Be Home & At Sea

It's so good to be home. The road trip was uneventful which is a real success when you think about it. Not that we didn't have events, but everything worked on the car, no problems with people, traffic, cops, etc...

We traveled from MN to KS to visit Pat's Brothers and family. It was a great night dinner, and breakfast the next morning we get up then off again. This time to Myrtle Beach to visit Brad, Stacie and the kids. We stayed 4 days and enjoyed our time together.

Then off to Florida. A nice 11 hour trip where we changed the

world and fixed it all up. We're so smart when it comes to creating a world for the two of us. It's perfect. Now the hard part... Getting the rest of the World to go along with us. I'll work on that next.

As soon as we got to town, I had a couple of charters that needed some time on the water. Good for me too, I was really ready to get Panacea out of the slip and run some water under her keel. The first charter was a couple from Germany with their three kids. It was a nice 4 hour sail on the Gulf of Mexico with good wind and a puffy cloud day. What more could we ask for.

It was a good day to blow out the cobwebs from this 'ol brain of mine. Forgetting to flip switches and learning how to run the auto pilot again were just a couple of the things. I thought the CD player was on the fritz, but my mate Alex went and fixed it... I asked him what was wrong and he said I didn't have the "Stereo" switch turned on, on the panel... He's such a master of things.

I run an ad on Alex Dorsey's website, http://www.ProjectBlueSphere.com. He's a good friend and we enjoy the same love for sailing. He's sailing the world and it's a great blog that if you are interested in what it's like out there, alone, on a boat, you should read it. In fact read it from the beginning. You'll get caught up on the project and be amazed a the wealth of information you'll pick up. But be prepared for a long read. He's been out there for years, and blogging since the beginning.

Also pick up his CD's. Great stuff there and you are supporting a sailor that just wants to share his life and be free. Once you read the blogs, you'll understand.

So I get a call from Luso and Claudia. Friends of Alex's and have been in Florida building a boat for 10 years and needed a shot in the arm to help them realize what they were doing.

They've been building a 47' Schooner. It was an empty shell when they bought her and they are trying to get her finished before they leave to travel to South America. He's from Brazil and she's from Columbia. They are an amazing couple.

Now that they got out on the water again, they realize that a boat is never finished and they need to just get out there and sail. So December, they move her to a new anchorage and run her up for sea trials and off they go. Best of luck my friends. Stay in touch and thanks for coming into our lives.

We have a few days of weather coming up at the moment, so I'm going to take care of some projects that need to be done and continue to move into our little place here on the beach. Time to relax a bit, shake off the road dust and get that long awaited sand between our toes.

2012 is going to be a bumper season down here, so get those reservations in soon. People are fed up with all the politics, and other crap being heaped onto us and are just saying ____ __ and getting out to have some fun. So plan early.

We are expecting to get busy and want to show you the best that Fort Myers Beach has to offer. Sailing on the Gulf of Mexico is one of the best deals you can do down here for that "Special" entertainment you are looking for. Let us be your guides.

The Last Leg on Tuesday

Every time Pat and I travel, by car, around this wonderful country of ours, we enjoy the diverse beautiful land, people, towns and nature that we see. It puts things in perspective for us and gets our juices flowing on different projects in our lives. We become more thankful and grateful for the people in our lives and we embrace the energy and the power that makes it all happen. It's a pretty cool thing.

But as we get closer to our home, it's like leading a horse to the barn. We get excited and trot a bit faster and just can't wait to get our toes in the sand and a rum something in our hands. Panacea is sitting and waiting for us to take the lines off the dock and get some water passing under her keel and we are ready to let her take us to the best cruising waters in SW Florida.

It's good to see the kids here in Myrtle beach too. Brad and Stacie are doing fine and the grandkids are getting bigger. Riana is just hitting 13 and Mallory is at 8 now. Where does the time go. That's why we enjoy every precious moment of our lives. We just don't want anything to slip away.

My daughter, Nadine just had a birthday today too. She's a special lady and way too many miles are between us right now. I talked to her and all is well.

So all in all things are going just fine. Life is treating us well and we are very happy. Lot's of changes coming up soon, so I'll keep you posted.

I want to remind all of you to look at the "Internet Only Specials" every once and a while. There may be a sailing deal that you may want to take advantage of. Headin' South - Good to Head Home

Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up that we are leaving Minnesota and heading back to our home in Fort Myers Beach. We have been away for a bit and need to get back to our lives by the sea.

I also want to thank everyone in Minnesota and the surrounding states for your support. As "Brother Paul" Magician, I want to personally thank everyone that watched, participated and dropped a buck or two into my hat at the Renaissance Festival. I had a ball.

Pat the Garlic Lady sure enjoyed seeing all her regular customers that she has met over the years. We had some special times with you and know that as you stink up your kitchen, you will remember us too. You guys sure know how to slather up the garlic and we picked up some great recipes that we will share during the year at Pat's site: PatTheGarlicLady.com.

She worked with an amazing crew with Kacie, Jen and Isaac. They all worked so well together and the fun they had was recognized by passers by and customers. We have had several comments from people that they just wanted to buy something from us because it was just so much fun. Thanks guys and we'll be seeing ya'll soon.

Kacie is heading to North Carolina for the Festival there and Jen stays here in Minnesota to work and freeze through the winter. They have good stock up here.

We also had the Michigan show going the same time as the Minnesota show with our manager Cindy at the helm there. Cindy is heading to Minnesota and we'll be catching up with here down the road.

Jim Reid has been busy on the west coast, well Arizona doing shows and will continue to do so. Cricket and Danny are in Albuquerque doing the Balloon Fiesta so it's a real busy Garlic season right now. Check out Pat's scheduled shows at: PatTheGarlicLady.com.

So we will drive down to Kansas City tomorrow to visit Pat's brothers and then head over to Myrtle Beach for 4 days to visit with the kids. We'll be eating sushi at Zushi Sushi by 8:00 p.m. on the 11th of October. Can't wait.

Love, Light & Magic

I'm out of town at the moment and as I sit in a nice little apartment in MN, at a coffee table, looking out my window and watching the traffic on 494 and pretending that the traffic noise is the sound of the sea, I realize that I'm the most blessed man in the world. I hope everyone feels this way.

Panacea is in great hands with my mate Alex living just down the dock. John is onboard making sure things are running smooth. Salty Sam's Marina, Parrot Key Grill, and Big Game Bar and Grill are gearing up for the up coming season. News from the beach is sounding like this is going to be a great season.

My wife Pat and sea dog Maggie are here with me. Our little family is enjoying selling the Garlic and performing at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. Good friends here are spending time with us and making us always feel welcome.

Capt. Dan and Dianne are taking anyone that wants to sail in the Gulf of Mexico and is taking good care of the people that call me and want to sail on Panacea. Capt. Ron is keeping me laughing with his political sense of humor and we have found a nice duplex to move into when we get back in a few weeks.

All is very, very well.

Projects are continuing on Panacea. New fittings here and there, new hoses, some rigging upgrades, and plans for a bit of canvas repair and such. I've got some photos of broken parts that Alex has sent in, I'll get some up here soon so you can see what he's been up to.

I've been busy putting together new marketing materials and packages for you to enjoy this year. I have a new "Internet Only Special" so go up and book early on that one. I think it's going to be a blast. Kind of a one night party on the water with a great couple of meals, and sailing.

My new rack cards are in process and you'll see them popping up on the beach soon.

So in other words, I'm busy with FantaSea Sailing, Garlic and Magic (33 shows this last weekend. Still recouping.) We love our work, we love the people that are in our lives and we are excited about the new season coming up in SW Florida.

Here Comes September... Already.

September. Usually the slowest sailing month in Florida. Kids are back in school. Vacations have slowed down. Plans are being made for the winter. Plans of getting out of the snow in January, February and March. It's the time of transition. The time for new plans for FantaSea Sailing.

For those of you that need a little R&R, an overnight stay on Panacea is just the thing. A sail, a motor, an anchorage, a dinner, a breakfast and back.

I'm putting a nice little overnight package that I think will be too much fun. I mean all our sails are too much fun, but this one will be a special sail for 2 to 4 people.

Something like this:

1:00 p.m. - Depart Salty Sam's Marina
5:00 p.m. - Arrive at Glover Bight Anchorage
7:00 p.m. - Dinner

8:00 a.m. - Breakfast
9:00 a.m. - Depart Glover Bight Anchorage

11:00 a.m. - Arrive at Salty Sam's Marina

Price: Who knows. It will be inclusive. We're crunching the numbers this week and going to put it up on the "Internet Special" page soon.

So watch closely and jump on it. Book early to get you dates and let's go play together... Again.

Just thinking of my family in Myrtle Beach, SC as Irene rocks there night as she passes by on the way to smack North Carolina in the morning.

Here's Irene Heading Thru the Bahamas

I love the way Irene is turning north. That will keep her off the coast of Florida, but it sure isn't helping the Bahamas. They catch the brunt of these storms and seem to just put another stripe on the wall to show the water height and storm names.

Just Received Reminders Why I Live in SW Florida

Oh how a simple photo can change a day. Thank you Dan and Dianne for dropping me a couple of shots of beautiful Fort Myers Beach. You guys look great and the beach is calling my name.

Yep, going out of town for business is important to me. I love doing magic and sharing my world with a ton of people. It's a pleasure to see all my ol' friends up here in MN and do dinners and play with everyone, catch up on who's here and there and where they are in there lives.

But one thing is for sure, I really do love the ocean. I'm learning so much about how it ticks and what we need to do to make a difference to get the Gulf healthy again.

Dan & Dianne are amazing people. They came into my life out of the blue, bought my sailing business and have continued it on to maintain the number one spot in Fort Myers Beach on Trip Adviser. I'm proud of them both for making the changes in their lives and I'm proud to be their friend. Pat and I cherish our relationship with them and look forward to getting our knees under the same table again.

We play together, we sail together, we party together we just have fun with each other. That's the way friends should be.

By selling Magic Wind Adventure Sailing to Dan, it changed all of our lives. He became a captain, and I started FantaSea Sailing to continue doing what I love to do. Plenty of room for sailors down here in SW Florida and our business complement each other. I look forward to a long time friendship with these guys.

Sure we both sail out of Salty Sam's marina, we both offer half day, sunset and custom charters but the sense of competition only make our businesses strive to be the best on the beach. He keeps me on my toes and I do the same for him, I think. So you can't go wrong when you want to get out on the water.

Our boats are a bit different. Capt. Dan's Star of Orion is a sleek Hunter 380 that is the newest boat in the fleet of sailing excursions in the area. Mine, Panacea, is a 1980 Endeavor center cockpit ketch. She's 43 feet long and has 6' 7" headroom through out. A lot of history and a pleasure to sail on.

So I'll look at these photos often Captain. Thanks for reminding all of us that we live in paradise and no matter where our travels take us, we will always be home with the dolphins, sea turtles and eagles. You guys are the best.

I'm always looking for information that is all in one place. So when I find one, I like to share it with anyone that wants to listen.

Here's a site called Mike's Weather Page and is at http://www.spaghettimodels.com/

Here you will get more information that you really want, all on one page, that is clickable and opens up the information you want so you can see storms, storm tracks, radar, reports and discussions, videos etc.

I think you'll find this an interesting site. It is graphic loaded, so give it some time to load before you start clicking around. Let me know what you think?

During the hurricane season it's good to keep updated about where, when and how much junk is heading your way. The National Hurricane Center is the place to pick up that information.

There are a lot of mobil apps out there that will give you a lot of information about where the hurricanes are and you can search your market places for them and some are very good, but most of the information that's being fed into them come from the National Hurricane Center's data.

As you can see, most of the storms come off the coast of Africa this time of year. Hurricane season starts the 1st of June, but at that time most of the storms start in the Caribbean, but now they are coming from Africa and have plenty of time, warm water and distance to do what they do so well.

It's an exciting time of year. Some of my friends work on boats and love to repair fiberglass and such so they like a good hurricane now and then to keep 'em working. As for me, let them all head north and die in the north Atlantic.

So check out the National Hurricane Center now and then and see how things are going. Lots of information there like satellite photos, names, tracks, water vapor and a ton of other things click all the links you can find to see what they have to offer.

In the mean time, call me for information if you are looking to get some sailing in. It's a great time of year and the seas are calm and comfy.

Turtles... Turtles... Turtles...

So I contacted Eve over at TurtleTime.org so that I can get some information up here for you to join in on the effort to protect the sea turtles we have here in the Gulf of Mexico.

Every year on our beaches, there's a bunch of Loggerhead Turtles that come to the beach, at night to lay there eggs. On TurtleTime.org, you can check out the information that is placed up there and join the fight to protect these amazing creatures.

Here is just a snippet of information the you will find on their site:

Loggerhead turtles have existed on Earth for millions of years with little serious threat to their survival – until recently. Pollution, lighted beaches, loss of nesting habitat, drowning in shrimp nets and other fishing gear have contributed to the drastic decline of these and other sea turtles.

So watch this blog and I'll be giving more information as it comes in.

A New Place For the Captains Ramblings...

Well since I'm putting up a new site, I think I'll get my blogs on the same server as my site. Now it will all be at home. Easy to get to, easy to write offline, just a better place and a better feel.

It seems like most comments are sent to my email or messaged through Facebook, so the comment features of the old blog site didn't seem like it was the place to be putting my money. I'll still be able to share photos, video, links and such here, so I think this is a good move for me and Panacea.

I'll still ramble about things you may not want to know about. I'll still rant about the powers that be letting our oceans go on the back burner. I'll still try to get you guys to help dolphins, sea turtles and other marine wildlife, even if you don't live by the sea, these guys need our help. It's their home.

So not much will change on the outside looking in.

So check back often and I'll try my best to keep you updated to all the stuff that's going on around here and there.
